Don't Cheat Your Car with the Wrong Oil Blend!
Do you know what you motor oil needs are? Everyone wants their vehicle to last as long as it can, to perform to the best of its ability, and to have the protection it needs. That is why choosing the right kind of motor oil is so important.
Here at Ghent Chevrolet Cadillac in Greeley, we offer a large selection of new Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles of any brand. Depending on your car's make, model, and year, you will find a specific manufacturer-recommended oil in your owner's manual. Different types of oil vary in viscosity and flow rate -- indicated by a number-letter combination such as 5W-20, or 10W-30.
Oil also falls into two basic categories: conventional or synthetic.
Conventional oil - (also called mineral oil) is the stuff drivers have been using since the dawn of the automobile. It is simply crude oil refined to remove impurities, and it's the most affordable type of oil by far.
Synthetic oil - usually starts out as a petroleum product as well, but the oil molecules are broken down into their base components, and rearranged into man-made molecules designed to give ideal engine-lubrication properties. Synthetic oils last longer, resist forming sludge, and maintain their viscosity better over a more extreme temperature range. The only downside is, synthetic oil can be expensive.
Should I Use Conventional or Synthetic Oil?
It is pretty straightforward -- if you put a lot of strain on your motor, it's always best to go with a higher grade oil. Many new vehicles these days require that you only put synthetic oil in them, or you may void the warranty. If in doubt, it's a good idea to check in your owner's manual.
If you are easy on your ride, get frequent oil changes, or if your warranty does not require synthetic, then all you may need is a conventional motor oil. It is worth noting, however, that even older-model vehicles can benefit from the engine-cleaning power of synthetic oil, or a synthetic blend.
